Sam Neill Cancer Update: Star in Remission, but Doctors Warn Treatment May Stop Working
In a new interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Australian Story, Neill shared an update on his cancer battle, revealing that he has been in remission for the past 12 months thanks to an experimental drug. However, he also acknowledged that his doctors have warned him that the treatment may eventually stop working.
"I'm prepared for that," Neill said. "I'm not remotely afraid of death. It's never worried me from the beginning. But I would be annoyed, because there are things I still want to do."
Neill first noticed something was wrong when he developed swollen glands in his neck while doing publicity for Jurassic World Dominion in early 2022. After seeing a doctor, he was diagnosed with AITL, a rare and aggressive type of blood cancer.
Neill initially underwent chemotherapy, but it stopped working after three months. He then turned to an experimental drug called ibrutinib, which has helped him achieve remission. However, his doctors have told him that the drug is likely to stop working eventually, and that he will need to continue to be monitored closely.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Neill remains positive and optimistic. He is grateful for the time he has been given, and he is determined to make the most of it.
"I've had a wonderful life," Neill said. "I've been very lucky. I've had a career that I've loved, and I've had a wonderful family and friends. So I'm not complaining."
Neill's fans and friends were relieved to hear that he is in remission, but they are also saddened by the news that his treatment may eventually stop working. They are sending him their love and support as he continues his cancer battle.
In the meantime, Neill continues to work on new projects. He is currently filming the Peacock limited series Apples Never Fall, and he has several other films in the pipeline.
Neill's courage and resilience in the face of cancer is an inspiration to us all. We wish him all the best in his continued fight.
